Expressions of Interest for New Faculty-led Study Abroad Programs—Academic Year 2025 and Beyond
The Global Learning Hub supports “Global Education for All,” a campus goal to provide 100% of our undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with global learning opportunities that change their lives and our world.
We invite Academic Senate and Academic Federation faculty with active teaching appointments to submit Expressions of Interest for new faculty-led study abroad programs for a future invitation for development in 2025 or later. Promising and/or innovative Expressions of Interest may be invited to submit a more fully developed proposal for 2025 or beyond.
Expansion of the Global Learning Hub’s current portfolio is dependent on administrative capacity and funding. Although the portfolio for Academic Year 2024 is complete, we are inviting Expressions of Interest for 2025 and beyond, should future capacity allow for expansion. The Global Learning Hub is prioritizing new programmatic models discussed below, and all Expressions will be considered with respect to the overall portfolio of program types/locations, demonstrated potential student interest, estimated costs, and other criteria discussed below.
The deadline for Expressions of Interest is Monday, February 12, 2024 (11:59 p.m.). Expressions of Interest should be 2-3 pages long.
This invitation focuses on two Study Abroad models, the Global Intensives, which respond to students who seek access to shorter duration and less costly programming, and to faculty whose responsibilities require less time away from campus.
Global Intensives—Quarter Abroad + Winter Break Programs (for Fall 2025 or beyond)
In this model, students are enrolled in a course (3-5 units) on campus for an entire quarter before they travel abroad for 2+ weeks to pursue related project-based learning during Winter break. Flexible modalities. Read more about this model (PDF).
Global Intensives—Summer Abroad Programs (for Summer 2025 or beyond)
Summer Abroad Intensives enroll student cohorts of 25-32 for 6 units of credit for 3 weeks abroad and focus on one or more UN Sustainable Development Goals or UC Davis Grand Challenges. Read more about this model (PDF).
Expressions of Interest must demonstrate how the proposed program builds upon approved courses, engages with UC Davis’s Global Learning Goals and Outcomes and aligns with the campus Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion vision.
Faculty expressing interest for a Summer Abroad Intensive program must also demonstrate how their program proposal focuses on one or more of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or UC Davis Grand Challenges.
Due to the investment by faculty and the Global Learning Hub to launch new programs, programs are expected to run consistently for several years; Expressions should discuss this commitment by the proposer and their home department. If an Expression of Interest is invited to be submitted as a full proposal and, eventually approved for development, faculty will collaborate with the Faculty Director and Global Learning Hub staff to build and market the program and will receive 24/7 support while on site.
The deadline for Expressions of Interest is Monday, February 12, 2024 (11:59 p.m.) and must follow instructions found here.
Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by the Global Learning Hub Program Review committee, which advises the Vice Provost and Dean of Global Affairs on selection. Invitations to submit full proposals will be announced in May 2024 and will include discussion around potential timelines for development.
