A Message to Students and Parents
Having come of age in the Philippines under the authoritarian rule of Ferdinand Marcos, I witnessed first-hand the suffering that poor governance can inflict on so many. This experience has underpinned my academic research, which currently focuses on how official development assistance, aka foreign aid, interacts with conditions in recipient countries to promote or hinder good governance. I am looking forward to leading students on our Quarter Abroad Program at the London School of Economics (LSE) because of its top-notch International Development program. While in London, students will have the opportunity to learn more about international development cooperation from LSE staff and guest speakers, who have considerable experience working for international development agencies and non-governmental organizations in the developing world, and who are likely to present students with perspectives to which they are unaccustomed."
